How to make homemade compost step-by-step

• Gather each of the organic waste you have, among those we mentioned above, along with some garden waste such as plants, herbs, and leaves. It is not recommended that you add traces of dairy products, meats, or any type of chemicals or oils to the mixture.

• Choose a place in the garden and make a hole in the ground. This hole will be 50 cm deep and 50 cm in diameter. Another option is to use a container without a lid and with holes in the surface.

• Introduce each of the organic materials into the well and cover them with soil.

• Cover the upper part of the hole with a metal mesh, preventing rainwater from seeping in and ending up puddling.

• Aerate the hole with the waste once a week. With a rake, you can remove debris from the outside in. This way you will prevent the waste from compacting.

• Always verify that materials are breaking down properly. Remember that fertilizer needs a certain degree of humidity. To check that the decomposition process is correct, notice if the pile of waste looks like a wet sponge.

• If you start making the fertilizer during the summer months, it will be ready after 2 or 3 months, however, if you plan to do it during the winter months, you will normally have it ready in 5 months.

• The main indication that the mixture is ready is that you cannot distinguish each of the original organic waste. This fertilizer will have a moist earthy look and smell, with a dark brown color.

• After months of preparation, you can add organic fertilizer to the plants in your garden.
